Vēsturiski ziedi ir kalpojuši kā slēpts saziņas līdzeklis mīlētājiem, ļaujot viņiem nodot konfidenciālus vēstījumus. Vēstures gaitā dažādi ziedi tika izmantoti, lai diskrēti apzīmētu LGBTQ+ kopienas locekļus, un šajā tradīcijā nozīmīga loma bija Oskaram Vaildam, kurš izvēlējās zaļo neļķi.
Mana apbrīna par Oskaru Vaildu aizsākās 17 gadu vecumā, kad es tikko sāku pētīt savu identitāti. Viņš bija ikoniska 19. gadsimta beigu personība, kuru slavēja par viņa homoseksualitātes atzīšanu un literāro izcilību. Laikā, kad LGBTQ+ identitāte saskārās ar kriminalizāciju un sabiedrības stigmatizāciju, Vailds ar savu atklātību un asprātību atstāja neizdzēšamu iespaidu uz LGBTQ+ kultūru. Viens no viņa paliekošākajiem ieguldījumiem bija zaļās neļķes kā savas un līdzīgi domājošo seksualitātes simbola pieņemšana.
Oskara Vailda zaļā neļķe kalpoja par LGBTQ+ identitātes simbolu ne tikai viņam, bet arī daudziem citiem, kas meklēja smalku veidu, kā paust savu identitāti sabiedrībā, kura ne pārāk viegli pieņēma viņu seksuālo orientāciju. Diskrēta zaļās neļķes nēsāšana kļuva par spēcīgu LGBTQ+ indivīdu emblēmu Latvijā un ārpus tās, sniedzot vienotības un kopīgas identitātes sajūtu.
Pasaulē, kurā LGBTQ+ cilvēki var saskarties ar aizskarošiem apzīmējumiem un aizspriedumiem, ir svarīgi atcerēties, ka spēks definēt sevi ir pašiem. Neatkarīgi no aizvainojošiem vārdiem vai pārpratumiem, LGBTQ+ cilvēkiem ir iespēja veidot savu naratīvu. Tā vietā, lai internalizētu aizvainojošus vārdus, viņi var izvēlēties tos definēt no jauna, apgalvojot: "Jā, es esmu kā skaists zieds, kas ir izturējis izaicinājumus, izturējis grūtības, bijis stiprs pret nelaimēm un, neskatoties uz to visu, turpina ziedēt visā savā krāšņumā."
Tā kā esmu krievu izcelsmes un dzīvoju konservatīvā valstī, kas iebilst pret visu “krievu”, nekad neesmu juties patiesi pieņemts. Tomēr LGBTQ+ kopiena, neraugoties uz tās izaicinājumiem, dod man cerību un vienotības sajūtu, līdzīgi kā ziedi, tostarp zaļā neļķe, ir bijuši daļa no slēptās identitātes valodas. Šo simbolisko ziedu bagātā vēsture uzsver LGBTQ+ kopienas Latvijā noturīgo spēku un izturību, jo viņi neatlaidīgi tiecas pēc pieņemšanas un vienlīdzības.

Flowers have historically served as a covert means of communication for lovers, enabling them to convey confidential messages. Throughout history, various flowers were utilised to discreetly signify members of the LGBTQ+ community, with Oscar Wilde's choice of the green carnation playing a significant role in this tradition.
My admiration for Oscar Wilde began at the age of 17 when I was just starting to explore my own identity. He was an iconic figure in the late 19th century, celebrated for his unapologetic acceptance of his homosexuality and his literary brilliance. At a time when LGBTQ+ identity faced criminalisation and societal stigma, Wilde's openness and wit left an indelible mark on LGBTQ+ culture. One of his most enduring contributions was adopting the green carnation as a symbol of his sexuality and that of like-minded individuals.
Oscar Wilde's green carnation served as a symbol of LGBTQ+ identity, not just for him but also for many others seeking a subtle way to express themselves in a society that did not easily accept their sexual orientation. The discreet wearing of the green carnation became a potent emblem for LGBTQ+ individuals in Latvia and beyond, providing a sense of unity and shared identity.
In a world where LGBTQ+ individuals may face derogatory labels and prejudice, it's vital to remember that the power to define oneself lies within. Regardless of hurtful words or misunderstandings, LGBTQ+ individuals have the power to shape their own narrative. Instead of internalising hurtful words, they can choose to redefine them, asserting, “Yes, I am like a beautiful flower that has persevered through challenges and hardships, stood strong against adversity, and, despite it all, continues to bloom in full colour.”
Since I am of Russian decent living in a conservative country that opposes everything “Russian”, I've never truly felt accepted. However, the LGBTQ+ community, despite its challenges, gives me hope and a sense of unity, much like the way flowers, including the green carnation, have been a part of a hidden language of identity. The rich history of this symbolic flower underscores the enduring strength and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in Latvia, as they persevere in their pursuit of acceptance and equality.
